Perfect for the Race to the Top Fund!

Created to improve state education quality and student achievement, the Race to the Top Fund will, according to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, “enable us to spur reform on a national scale—driving school systems to adopt college and career-reading, internationally benchmarked standards.” Grants will focus on four reform goals

  • using data to drive instruction
  • raising standards
  • turning around historically low-performing schools
  • improving teacher and principal quality

It is recommended that you participate in a Great Books Professional Development Workshop before using Shared Inquiry in your classroom.

Starting Off Strong

Beginning Shared Inquiry
in Your Classroom

Introduce Shared Inquiry in a systematic way. A student book with four short literature selections and an accompanying Leader’s Guide introduce the key features of the Shared Inquiry method of learning to your classroom. If you or your students are new to Great Books, it is recommended that you begin your program with Starting Off Strong.

Each of the four easy-to-follow lessons features

  • specific learning objectives to focus on during a brief discussion of a short reading
  • descriptions of how the objectives contribute to student learning
  • numbered steps that guide you through the process of conducting each lesson
  • a script that shows how one leader presents the learning objectives in each lesson
  • troubleshooting tips pertaining to each
  • writing and reflection activities to help you and your students assess your progress
