Teaches strategies to understand texts. Includes articles and book excerpts on engaging topics such as how-to information, entertainment reviews, fads, and teen rights. Students learn nonfiction reading strategies, such as identifying facts and details and understanding sequence. 15 selections, 22 reading strategies, 271 pages.

Literature

Contains engaging short stories and novel excerpts on themes relevant to adolescents, such as secrets, equality, identity, loss, and family. The authors include Walter Dean Myers, Nancy Werlin, Scott Westerfeld, Gail Carson Levine, and more. Students learn fiction reading strategies, such as identifying main characters and main events or summarizing a story. 24 selections, 22 reading strategies, 271 pages.

Teacher Guide with Test Bank & Answer Key

Includes a summary of each reading as well as lesson plan ideas and handouts for extra practice with the strategies in the Student Edition. A Test Bank contains chapter quizzes and volume tests, providing brief, informal assessments and longer, formal assessments. The multiple-choice questions provide useful standardized-test practice.
